Google News on HBR Blogs

I have a post up today on HBR Blogs on Google’s recent changes to its Google News site.

  1. Using metatags doesn’t have to become a “norm.” Google, as the monopoly platform, can (gradually) enforce it, ignoring sources that don’t use the new metatags or defaulting them to low visibility. In contrast, there’s competition and free entry in academic journals.

Working around the metatags (like not citing, instead of following the new norm) doesn’t seem like a significant threat. It’s not like publishers are as technologically sophisticated as tech companies like Google that routinely deal with hackers.

I don’t understand how this could lead to exclusion of “long tail” content. If customers want to see fringe stories, gNews already has categories and search.
