The Australian paywall

The Australian newspaper has gone behind a paywall. So off to Business Spectator  for my morning read and gone are the links through to articles in the Oz. However, not everything is behind the paywall – this critical article for instance.

  1. The problem is that readers of the blog may not be signed up – so I cannot link stories. I will have to look closer at their business model. If they allow a certain number of free articles per month, then links can still work (as they do with the Economist). If it is a ‘first paragraph you can read but subscribe to read more’ approach then links only work for subscribers. 

  2. There’re ways around the paywall. Search for the article you’re after on google and click on the ‘cached’ version (when you hover over the relevant link on the search page you should see a preview on the right hand side of the page and on that ‘preview’ there should blue coloured link ‘cached’) which you can then link to instead of the paywall version. For some reason this cheat won’t work on the ipad as can’t get the cached link on google mobile or classic but works on iphone and pc’s.

News media are primarily after “influence” – the ability to convince readers of a particular view.  Which is, after all, the sort of access that advertisers pay for.  But if all readers pay for news – as the Australian now wishes, and the AFR has done for years – those reader numbers will die off – your income goes to just about everyone else.  I stopped reading AFR when it went to a subs model and the Australian is going the same way.  There’s more than enough free news and commentary out there to cover the items that mostly affect the populace everyday lives that one doesn’t have to pay for it.  One wonders if the advertising rates will go up to offset the readership loss.
