Keynote gasbagging

Steve Job’s MacWorld keynote is tomorrow and there is a ton of speculation as to what it might bring. Last year, he managed to exceed expectations with the iPhone. I guess many are hoping that he will do it again.

Most of the speculation is about a new light weight laptop, perhaps with a multi-touch screen. This is fuelled by its current best guess name, ‘MacBook Air.” What the ‘Air’ is for is anyone’s guess as laptops are pretty much wireless anyway. It could refer to weight. It could also refer to energy; that is, freeing the last wire (the power) through a long charge.

For my part, I am still looking for the Apple television product. While it was hit by NBC pulling away from iTunes, Jobs appears to believe that DVDs are dead (re: his downplaying of iDVD in last year’s upgrade to iLife). This would lead towards a product that was a hybrid between a Mac Mini and an Apple TV that allowed for better viewing of all video content on the internet or from a hard drive. Consistent with this is EyeTV’s upgrade to 3.0; timed for MacWorld as well as an overdue launch of new displays.

[Oh yeah, while we are on the subject of iPhones, take a look at this showcasing of the new Google interface on the iPhone. Pictures clearly show an iPhone in Australia on Optus.]

[Update: here are some links to Keynotes of MacWorld's past. The Microsoft deal announcement of 1997 is an amazing one.]
