Outsourcing the artist
March 4, 2007 | 1 Comment | Joshua Gans
So we went to the National Gallery of Victoria today to see the “Cubic Stuctural Evolution Project 2004″ by Danish artist Olafur Eliasson. I guess we expected to see some interesting sculptures made out of white lego bricks by Eliasson. (Something like this). This was billed as part of his “ongoing investigation into the ways we see the world.”
Well it turns out that Eliasson wasn’t really going to report on that investigation. Instead, he seems to have outsourced that actual art task to his audience. There was a pile of white bricks waiting to be artified. We had a 15 minute opportunity to contribute to the work (see the picture here) which isn’t really enough time to be truely artistic. The larger constructions that were there testified to the fact that others may have got more than their 15 minutes of artistic fame.
Fortunately, entry is free (just as well!). Consider it an activity for the kids.
