Apple/EMI in The Age
April 4, 2007 | Comments Off | Joshua Gans
A cobbled together a few comments for The Age on the Apple/EMI deal:
Melbourne University economics professor Joshua Gans predicted that it was the beginning of the end for attempts to digitally protect music copyright. Rather than encourage illegal copying, it would actually reduce it.
“People illegally download (music) because they find it more convenient,” he said. Once the inconvenience of DRM was removed, more people would choose the legal alternative.
He said he expected other labels would soon follow EMI. It might also “save the album”, Professor Gans said, referring to EMI’s decision to exempt them from the price rise.
EMI managing director John O’Donnell said he hoped Professor Gans was right. “We and our artists want to point people to a whole body of work,” he said. “By holding the price at the old level it will be a positive for the future of the album.”
