The Queen’s diamond jubilee celebrations have been filling the news – including the river pageant. But I was surprised to find out that there was also a river pageant for the Queen’s silver jubilee. See here. I remember a ‘river pageant’ from 1977, but it was slightly different. Organized by then Mr Richard Branson, it involved one group – the Sex Pistols – and was eventually stopped by the police. See here. Two points:
- They didn’t invite the surviving Sex Pistols back for the concert – where is your sense of humour guys; and
- In 1977 England and Europe was racked by economic uncertainty and high unemployment. Hmmm. Maybe something to do with jubilee’s?
