The Media is Crossed

The Federal government appears to be going ahead with the removal of cross-media ownership restrictions and also, thankfully, restrictions on foreign ownership. We could use more free entry into television but will have to be content with multi-channeling for the moment. Also, there appear to be some important relaxation to anti-siphoning laws (including use it or lose it). If only the same criteria would apply to non-sports?

Accompanying this are restrictions on overall concentration (limits to 5 ‘voices’ in capital cities and 4 in rural areas). Although the ACCC still has power to find that consolidation of like media may be anti-competitive.

All this seems in-line with my hopes earlier this year. However, the presence of major bottlenecks in telecommunications infrastructure remains a concern; you know who I am talking about.
