Peter Martin drank recycled water and almost gagged. He still thinks Canberra can move to recycled water but it looks like it will be a tough sell. What he doesn’t point out — and this is critical — is that the problem with reactions on recycled water is not what it will taste like but that the issue is that we insist on having our drinking water and water for other means come through the same tap. Well, if you don’t like drinking recycled water then you will have a simple solution, buy bottled water. The point is that for most (95% +) uses of water through the household, taste does not matter. We need to unbundle our water services (at least in our behaviour). Then the debate on recycled water becomes plain as day.
