Piracy and security

Gizmodo reports that even pirated copies of Windows 7 will receive updates. Why? Because viruses spead computer to computer and so pirated copies without security updates drive proliferation of the virus. This is interesting because being able to get security upates was previously a critical reason not to use pirated versions of Windows.

But there is another economics angle. There is the notion that in other areas (whereby I avoid certain terms because they might be filtered for email subscribers) unsafe practices can also lead to faster disease proliferation and moreover, a lack of connectivity caused by that can do the same thing. Here is an article on that stuff. There seems to be a relationship between the two.
