  1. Buying multiple “copies” up front (before actually reading the book and assessing if your friends would like it) probably wouldn’t work as well as ex post rewards (like discounts on future books).
    I think the latter sort of reward scheme is common online…yet I see a 2010 patent application on it. Also, a 2001 Marketing Science paper.
    This might have the negative side-effect of giving a lot of rewards to groups of customers who are sure to buy the product anyway buying via sequential referrals to milk it.
